Sego Canyon Rock Art

Led by: Diana and Steve Acerson

Sego Canyon, located just outside Crescent Junction, Utah, is a hidden gem that reveals some of the most haunting rock art in the American Southwest. The petroglyphs and pictographs, created by historic Fremont, Ute and Barrier Canyon cultures, offer a glimpse into the region's rich history and spiritual traditions.

These intricate designs, painted and etched onto the canyon's sandstone walls, tell stories that have withstood the test of time, making Sego Canyon a must-see for anyone interested in Native American heritage and prehistoric art.

This half-day trip is ideal for participants who are looking for a mellow field trip to a beautiful location. Though this trip is appealing to everyone, we especially recommend it for families with very young children, or individuals who are looking to avoid trips with longer or strenuous hikes.

  • Any car can make the journey. The rock art panels at Sego are accessible via short strolls from the parking area.

  • Bring lunch, water, sturdy shoes, binoculars, camera, and snacks.

Diana and Steve Acerson have been active in the preservation and protection of cultural sites with the Utah Rock Art Research Association (URARA) for the last 14 years. Diana is a conservationist and artist, and Steven has been interested in rock art sites since he was raised in Green River, after his father moved the family there to help his grandfather mine for uranium.

Many decades of exploring the region have given them a love of the landscape and the peoples who once lived here. Diana and Steve have been active in many projects with URARA, land managers, and private landowners that have resulted in the preservation of important rock art sites.

They are passionate about building public awareness to preserve these important and irreplaceable cultural resources.
