Where can I find the festival schedule?
The festival schedule is posted on our website: greenriverrocks.com.
-You may also pick up a printed festival guide in person at the John Wesley Powell River History Museum. The first opportunity to grab a paper copy is when the event kicks off on Friday, April 5th at 5pm–one hour before the Friday night lecture begins.
How can I sign up for a field trip? And are they really free?
Thanks to generous public support and private sponsors, all field trips are completely free! Sign-ups for field trips are on a first-come, first-serve basis and must be completed in person during the festival.
-Registration opens on Friday, April 5th at 5pm at the John Wesley Powell River History Museum, or on Saturday and Sunday at the festival information booth located outside museum.
-If you’re eager to join a specific trip, we suggest attending the Friday evening lecture to secure your spot early, as each trip is limited to 25 participants.
-Please ensure you complete the field trip waiver when signing up.
-The festival booth will open one hour before the Friday evening lecture and on Saturday and Sunday beginning at 9am.
Why can’t we sign up for field trips online or ahead of time?
Firstly, we need each participant to sign a waiver in person to participate in a field trip. Secondly, we need to ensure that participants are physically present as we need to directly communicate important information about each trip. It may feel like an old-fashioned way of doing things, but it allows us to greet and communicate with each participant in a meaningful way.
Do I need to drive my own car to field trip locations?
Yes, participants must arrange their own transportation to the field trip meeting point. Festival coordinators do not facilitate carpooling arrangements.
-Please note that many trips involve driving on dirt roads. Road condition details are available in each trip description on our website. High clearance or all-wheel drive vehicles may be necessary for some trips.
-Ensure your vehicle has a full tank of gas before departing.
-For half-day and full-day trips, bring your own lunches and snacks.
-Field trip leaders will gather their groups prior to departure in the parking lot of the John Wesley Powell River History Museum.
Can I collect rocks and fossils at Green River Rocks?
Most public land surrounding Green River is federal land administered by the Bureau of Land Management. Rockhounding on federal public land is permitted. In general, small amounts of rocks, minerals, petrified wood, and invertebrate fossils may be collected. Collection of vertebrate fossils such as dinosaur bone is strictly prohibited on public land.
Please consult this resource regarding rockhounding limits on Utah’s public lands: geology.utah.gov/popular/rocks-minerals/collecting-rules/
Are any field trip locations accessible?

Can kids come to this event? How old do they need to be?
Green River Rocks is an event for people of all ages. Parental supervision is required at all times at the museum and on all field trips. Shorter trips like Sego Canyon and Fossil Point are great for young families. Please discuss “Leave No Trace” principles with your families while on public lands.
What are Leave No Trace principles?
Please visit blm.gov/outdoorethics to learn more about outdoor ethics and treading lightly.
Are pets allowed?
Leashed, well-behaved pets are allowed on field trips and at the fair outside the museum. Pets are not allowed inside the museum. The festival coordinators reserve the right to determine if a pet is well-behaved.
When is the vendor fair?
